2017 Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion To Celebrate Alfa and All Italian Cars
The 9th annual Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion (August 27-30, 2017) will take on a decidedly Italian flavor as numerous racers of vintage Alfa Romeos, Fiats and (who knows?... perhaps even a few Isettas and Siatas) are expected to descend on Ohio’s South Bass Island for this year’s event, along with the usual turnout of marques such as MG, Triumph, Porsche, Lotus, Elva, Austin Healey and others. Held annually since 2009 at historic Put-in-Bay, OH -- where small-bore sports car raced from 1952 to 1959 and in 1963 -- Put-in-Bay attracts vintage racing participants and enthusiasts who value a low-key event at a historically significant location where the emphasis is on enjoyment.
“It’s as if all the old Road & Tracks stored on our shelves suddenly came to life,” said a recent participant.
“We’re very excited to see the mounting enthusiasm of many Alfa Romeo, Fiat and other Italian sports car owners and drivers who recognize that Put-in-Bay is a great place to come and enjoy their cars and each other,” said race director and event co-founder Jack Woehrle. “We are also hearing that a contingent of Morgans will be part of the show both on the track and off, and we are happy to welcome back the annual Turner Reunion which has been held at several previous Put-in-Bay sports car race events.”
Uniquely offering entry options for both racing- and non-racing participants, the modern-day Put-in-Bay sports car races generally welcome drivers of vintage race prepared pre-1973 production cars up to 3 liters, sports racers up to 1.5 liters, Formula Vees, and Formula Jrs. Exceptions are not uncommon so interested racers of cars outside the normal entry guidelines should contact Jack Woehrle (contact information below).
The Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion features two days of spirited racing around a challenging hay-bale lined airport circuit plus an original course tour, a car show, rocker cover races, a “recollections roundtable” program featuring participants in the original sports car races, an on-your-own rally and several social gatherings. New in 2016 was a free trackside “Fan Zone” sponsored by the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce providing tent-shaded bleachers for spectators and plenty of nearby concessions.
Held from Sunday afternoon through the Wednesday morning before Labor Day, the 2016 PIBRRR attracted a near-record entry of about 100 cars and a large crowd of spectators. In addition, live online streaming video coverage of part of the races on www.wpib.com (an online-radio station that covers many Put-in-Bay events) reached more than 14,000 viewers.
Put-in-Bay is a nostalgic enclave on South Bass Island, a short ferry ride off the shore of Lake Erie near Sandusky, Ohio. A resort community little changed from the ‘50s, it is one of the very few places in North America where post-war sports cars raced through towns and countryside on public roads and where those roads exist today virtually unchanged.
